about

Janet Klein & Her Parlor Boys are purveyors of rare, scintillating early Jazz, Tin Pan Alley and Vaudeville tunes of the 1920’s and 1930’s. 2018 marks the 20th year Janet has been recording and releasing songs from America’s rich musical Jazz heritage with loving flare, like no one else! Starting in 1998 Janet and her musician friends had a way of making forgotten Jazz music feel irresistible, old tunes simmer like new and obscure Jazz - thrilling and mischievous.

Shanghai Shuffle includes - 23 of the best, most Hotsy Totsy songs from Janet Klein & Her Parlor Boys’ 8 CDs, plus three unreleased debut tunes. Janet and the Boys are the best at what they do and this CD is a tip-top ticket to time travel.

Shanghai Shuffle features the most inspired performances by Janet & Parlor Boys notables: 2 alumni of Robert Crumb’s Cheap Suit Serenaders – Robert Armstrong and Tom Marion. Jazz historian and band leader, radio personality Ian Whitcomb, 1930’s guitar & whistling virtuoso Grandson of ZaSu Pitts – John Reynolds,
genius music arranger – Randy Woltz, Dan Levinson horn player with Vince Giordano and His Nighthawks, Marquis Howell leader of the Howlers, Brad Kay alumni with the Original Mystic Nights of the Oingo Boingo, the phenomenal Geoff Nudell, Corey Gemme, Craig Ventresco, Dan Weinstein, Jonathan Stout, Chloe Feoranzo and a host of other talented top notch ensemble LA based early Jazz musicians.

The USA release includes rare three NEW archeological debut treasures: “On the Beach with You”, "Rain" and "Cohen Owes Me $97"

Some threads of interest that can be found on Shanghai Shuffle:
Obscure composers and regional bands of the 20s like: Robert Cloud from Florida (“Oh!”) Phil Baxter from Texas (“Honey Child”) and Chester Leighton, Ipanna Troubadours (“In a Little Garden”)
Underappreciated Band Leaders: Blanche Calloway (“Getting Myself Ready for You”, Lil Armstrong Edith Wilson, “Concentratin’ On You” and “Baby it Must be Love”
Music from movies: Wheeler and Woolsey’s “Sing to Me”. Betty Boop cartoon “Old Man of the Mountain”, The movie Broadway Through a Keyhole “Doin’ The Uptown Lowdown” and “Hollywood Party” from a movie with the same title.
Duke Ellington, Fletcher Henderson and Ivy Anderson, Django Reinhardt: “Isn’t Love the Strangest Thing?” “Delta Bound” and the title track instrumental “Shanghai Shuffle”.
French Chansons and Musettes and 1020’s Hot Hawaiian: “Honolulu Stomp” and “Ce Disque Vous Dira”.

All CDs have gorgeous eye catching packaging inside and out and are produced by Robert Loveless (Savage Republic, 17 Pygmies and Scenic)
